..................................... The ‘absent presence’ which can be sensed in both Gwen John’s Corner of the Artist’s Room’ and Stephen Farthing’s ‘Room in Samur’ informs this installation. Twin towers – their proportions matching the former World Trade Centre – are placed near the pictures and the viewer can look into an image of a room containing a chair in the same position as in the paintings. A miniature CCTV camera relays an image to a monitor which shows a view of the room, chair and window from the painter’s viewpoint. Visitors who look in will find their eye appears on the monitor, they become both the watcher and the watched. .....................................
